About

SPORE
Turning a nature walk into a collection experience
The Spore app is a personal exploration that shows some of my design process, as well as my range as a UI/UX designer. It combines two things I love - product design and nature. As an avid hiker and nature lover, I’ve long wished for an app like this - that allows me to identify mushrooms and track which ones I’ve seen before and when. And to bring some of the excitement of game collection mechanics to the natural world.
ROLE
Director of Product Design
TOOLS
Figma
Key user needs:
Identify mushrooms with camera phone
Share discoveries with other fungi enthusiasts
Track mushroom discoveries in a collection
Share discoveries with other fungi enthusiasts
I chose to lean into the natural beauty of fungi for the design solution, with a warm palette and gouache-style illustrations generated by AI to give a consistent and scalable look to all images. My design style leans toward lots of open space with clean typography.

I build my design system as I work, being economical about new components by re-using as much as possible and limiting custom components.
